Biography Of Joseph Louis MD
Born in Haiti, Dr. Louis developed a particular interest in Medicine in his early childhood and he credits the physician Dr. Laurent who treated him a few times as the inspiration of his dream to become a Doctor in Medicine. During his teenage years he had the opportunity to observe with a practicing surgeon of his hometown, which sparked even more, his passion for Medicine. He joined the Faculte de Medecine and Pharmacie of the State University of Haiti in 1983. He completed his medical school degree in 1990, then spent one year of rural medicine as a general practitioner. From 1991 to 1995, he enrolled in a four- years Residency training in General Surgery at the State University Hospital of Haiti at the completion of which, he worked as a licensed General surgeon for 2 years in two rural Haitian-American hospitals: Albert Schweitzer Hospital and Hopital Bienfaisance of Pignon , where he was able to provide a wide scope of surgical procedures from urological, obstetrical, gynecological, orthopedic interventions beside “bread and butter” General Surgery. Working in a rural hospital he had to take calls to cover the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics departments also, experience which later influenced his choice of becoming a Family Physician in the US. In July 1997, Dr. Louis emigrated to the United States and passed all three steps of the USMLE ( United States Licensing Medical Exam ) in 1998. While applying for a US medical residency training, he worked as an EKG technician in the telemetry unit of Mulhenberg Regional Center in New Jersey and as a HAS (Human Services Assistant) at Greystone a psychiatric Hospital in NJ. In 2000 he joined Howard University Hospital for a year of surgical residency training. He then switched gears to join a Family Medicine Residency training at the Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers in Queens, New York, which he completed in 2004.
After his training, Dr. Louis worked in the outpatient setting as an Attending provider at the Caribbean American Family Health Center, affiliate of Lutheran Medical Center from 2004 to 2012 while taking calls from time to time with the Family Practice Residents at LMC. He later provided his services to multiple private institutions such as: Sugar Hill Medical PC from 2012 to 2013, then at South Island Medical Associates from 2013 to 2015, and Synergy Medical PC from 2015 to present.
Dr Louis is married to Dr. Martine Louis, a general surgeon, wound care specialist, Director of the Surgical ICU, Associate Program Director of the Surgical Residency Program, Co-Clerkship Director of the Medical Students from St Georges University at Flushing Hospital, NY. He has one son, Christopher Louis, a junior social worker in Orlando, Florida.
Dr Louis in an avid reader, with many interests in science, history, political sciences and he loves Jazz music and Sports in general. Besides English he speaks several languages like Spanish, French and Haitian Creole. When he is not at his patient’s side, his favorite time is spent at home with family.
Dr Louis is proud of his Haitian heritage, rooted in the education and values injected in him by his parents and shared by his brothers and sisters. He is the vice president of a non- profit organization AGAPE-HAITI, INC (website: agape-haiti.org), devoted for sixteen years to education of the Youth of his hometown, Jeremie in Haiti. He’s actually leading a fundraising campaign at gofundme.com to build a learning a center for the youth and scholarship beneficiaries of Agape. He travels back home yearly for medical and educational missions. Dr Louis strongly believes that we are all “citizens of the world” and that just as Albert Schweitzer once said, it It is not enough to be a good father, a good husband, a good churchgoer, we must help our fellowmen, it is a must, it is a privilege.
